Master bedroom + ensuite steam shower

Spa living at home

Enjoy your large master bedroom and shower made for two

The ensuite heated floors turn on at 5:30 and off again at 11. The shower itself is more than 8 ft wide and features two temperature zones: the rain can and the wall jets/wand can be two different temperatures.

Important points

Master bedroom feature walls are paintable

Instead of using pre-made slat products or acoustic panels, we opted to go with MDF slats on drywall so that we could paint them later if we ever decided to change it up.

Ensuite shower waterproofing and maintenance

As you can imagine, we did a lot of research before deciding to keep the windows in the shower. We learned that the windows are fine in the shower so long as:

  1. The windows surrounds are tiled/waterproofed and the sills must use an expandable epoxy grout vs. traditional grout.
  2. The shower is waterproofed around the windows should you need to replace the grout, a crack forms, etc.

As part of the renovation, all drywall was removed from the shower and replaced with Schluter KERDI-BOARD panels. The panels were installed right to the window frames and sealed.

Proactive Maintenance

  • Always squeegee the windows after a steam; do not leave any standing water on the sill
  • Check the grout lines regularly (especially in the winter) to ensure that there are no cracks on the sill

As long as you take care of the windows, you’ll have no problems. Not nearly as much water actually settles on the windows as you might think.

Steam shower details
  • Yes, you can have windows in a steam shower, but it comes with some maintenance: squeegee the windows after every steam, including the window sills (do not leave standing water)
    • Every week, check the grout around the windows to ensure there are no cracks and check the caulking for the same
    • The double-pane windows have no problems managing the steam or heat (surprisingly little of either actually impacts the windows), but you have to squegee them after to ensure water does not collect around seals/etc. and have time to degrade caulking/etc.
  • The Relax-a-Mist CR-11 steam generator is somewhat oversized for the steam room, so you get a thick steam every time in about 3 minutes
  • The steam room lights are Govee RGB lights (you can change colours via the app)
  • The heated floors are on a schedule (turn off at 11 pm, turn on at 5:30 am, turn off again at 10 am, turn on again at 5 pm). The panel to adjust this is on the closet wall.
  • The steam generator is located under the bottom shelf in the bathroom closet (tiled floor/trim as well)
  • We descaled the water heater and steam generator in 2024; you probably won’t need to descale it again until 2028.
    • The steam generator is the entire reason we installed a water softener
  • The wall jets + wand and the rain shower head can be set to two separate temperatures
Walk-in closet

We installed this Ikea closet system with LED lights in 2021. It’s held up well and has tons of space 🙂

It’s just as good as you hope it is

The perfect counter to Calgary’s cold winters

The steam shower goes from 0 to thick fog in about 3 minutes.

The Govee RBG lights can be any colour or colour combination, from a calming soft white to a… rave…

Imagine standing in a thick, warm fog of gold or purple.

In the summer, 4 – 7:30 pm is golden hour, where the sun beams through the windows and makes the steam glow. You’ll love it when you experience it 🙂

Other notable features

New roof + Hardie board in 2021

Three months after we moved in, hail wiped out our roof and siding. We opted to upgrade to Hardie Board composite siding, 6″ eavestroughs, and premium shingles.

Garage shelving

We set up the shelving so that you can fit a vehicle up to 235″ long on the right side of the garage.

Electrical upgrades

When we did the steam shower renovation, we installed an electrical subpanel. We added a whole-home surge protector in January 2025.

Lutron smart lights were installed in the main floor, upstairs hallway, and bonus room. These can be controlled via app as well as wall switches.

Comfort and convenience

Large walk-in closet that connects to your upstairs laundry

We swapped the typical wire closet shelving for an Ikea combination with  built-in LED lights, 8 drawers, two jewelry display drawers, and three hanging racks.

Move-in ready as soon as August 22
